If you're having problems finding short stories for your project visit this website:

American Literature

I suggest exploring Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, Herman Melville, Edgar Allan Poe, Jack London or Anton Chekhov. All of them have a long list of short stories. Skim through the titles and choose something that catches your eye.
